Kirkmichael House sits on the southern edge of the Cairngorms National Park, a former manse with a long and intriguing history. Built on the site of an ancient druidic temple, a sacred spring still emerges nearby.
Overlooking the River Ardle and surrounded by hills, farmland and open countryside, the house is perfectly placed for walking, cycling, motorcycling and exploring. The Cateran Trail passes close by, following old drovers’ routes through forest, glen and open hill.
Inside, Kirkmichael House is warm, lived-in and full of character — lovingly restored, eclectically decorated and very much a home rather than a conventional bed & breakfast.

Our most spacious room, No. 4 is filled with natural light from two large windows — one facing south and the other west — creating a bright, airy atmosphere throughout the day. It is comfortably furnished with a queen-sized bed, a richly patterned rug, characterful artwork and a sofa for relaxing. A writing desk provides a quiet space to work or sit with a book, while a wardrobe offers storage for a longer stay.

Kirkmichael is the ancient heart of Strathardle, a small village on the River Ardle whose history reaches back more than a thousand years. Once an important cattle-market stop where old drove roads converged, it remains a quiet, lived-in Highland village rather than a resort.
From the house you can walk into the village, join the Cateran Trail, stop at the community shop and café, or simply wander the river and local paths. There are also two local establishments serving food, so an evening meal does not always mean getting back in the car. The Cateran Ecomuseum also has a self-guided village walk for anyone curious about Kirkmichael’s history.
